Following a cochlear implant, positive results will only be achieved after auditory re-education of varying duration and difficulty, depending on the aetiology of the deafness of the patient concerned.
It will be longer and more complicated in the case of children born deaf or having lost their hearing before learning to talk or with adults having been deaf for a long period of time.
It will be quicker for adults who have only recently lost their hearing.
As with the adjustment of the processor, the re-education sessions are regular and frequent after the operation and less often as time goes by, usually after the first year. The re-education by the speech therapist varies according to the patient, but is based on the same fundamental principles:

  • identification of different sound sources
  • distinction between background noise and speech
  • recognition of rhythms and melodies
  • discrimination between phonetic elements and voice recognition.
